PANews reported on July 30 that according to Fortune magazine, US Vice President Harris may announce her running mate within a week. According to Polymarket's forecast, there are currently four frontrunners.
- Among them, Mark Kelly has a 36% chance of becoming Harris' running mate. Kelly is a retired NASA astronaut. In May of this year, Kelly voted in favor of overturning Staff Accounting Bulletin No. 121, which critics believe hinders investment banks from providing cryptocurrency custody services on a large scale.
- Josh Shapiro has a 33% chance of becoming Harris' running mate. Shapiro has been the governor of Pennsylvania since 2023, and before that he was the state's attorney general. In March of this year, Shapiro and Bitcoin miner Stronghold Digital Mining were sued by the environmental group Save Carbon County. The plaintiff accused Shapiro of contributing to the pollution of the local environment by providing tax credits to miners and failing to regulate their activities.
- Tim Walz has a 17% chance of becoming Harris’ running mate. Walz is the governor of Minnesota and served as the U.S. Representative for the state’s 1st District from 2007 to 2019. Walz has never spoken publicly about cryptocurrencies, and his tenure in the House predates major bills in the industry, making it difficult to gauge what stance he might take on digital assets.
- Pete Buttigieg has a 7% chance of becoming Harris' running mate. Buttigieg is the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. During his campaign for the 2020 Democratic nomination, he said Bitcoin should be "treated as a commodity," suggesting that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission should not have regulatory oversight of the currency.
Additionally, Gary Peters has not yet been included on Polymarket’s list, but Axios reported on Monday that unions are pushing Harris to put Peters’ name on the list. According to Stand With Crypto, the senator is “strongly opposed to cryptocurrency.” However, it is worth noting that Peters did vote in favor of repealing SAB-121.
