Coinbase is considering providing COIN shares in the form of tokens for users in the United States on Base, the layer-2 network on Ethereum that the project is developing.
Coinbase is considering issuing COIN shares in the form of tokens for users in the United States on its layer-2 network on Ethereum, according to a share from Jesse Pollak, the developer of Base, in a post on the X platform.
Currently, COIN shares in the form of tokens are already available for users outside the United States through protocols such as Backed, a real-world asset tokenization (RWA) platform, Pollak said in the January 3 post.
Pollak also said that the issuance of COIN on Base is "something we are considering in the coming year" and he believes that in the future, "every asset in the world will be on Base."
However, Pollak emphasized that Coinbase currently has no specific plans and is in the "exploration phase" to understand how to comply with regulations in the United States.
"We need clarity on regulations and innovations to embrace open blockchain technology to benefit everyone," Pollak added.
In November, U.S. crypto stocks like COIN surged after Donald Trump's presidential election victory, as many believed his victory would benefit the cryptocurrency industry.
On November 11, COIN shares rose more than 20%, crossing the $300 mark for the first time since 2021.
"Many believe that Trump's victory will help reduce regulatory pressure on Coinbase's Staking activities," Michale Miller, a stock analyst at Morningstar, commented in a research report in November.
