The company introduces the first three AI Video Lenses using an in-house generative model, exclusively for Snapchat Platinum users at $15.99/month.
Snapchat has taken a strategic step in the AI technology race by launching its first AI Video Lenses, powered by a video generation model developed in-house. This move not only strengthens Snap's leading position in the Augmented Reality (AR) field but also marks a strong shift towards AI technology - a trend dominating the global technology industry.
According to exclusive information from TechCrunch, the first three AI Video Lenses will only be available to users who subscribe to the premium Snapchat Platinum plan at $15.99 per month. This is a clear strategy to attract users to upgrade to higher-revenue service tiers, while also creating a competitive advantage over rivals like Instagram and TikTok.
The in-house AI investment strategy brings a dual advantage
This launch is the result of development efforts following Snap's announcement of an AI video creation tool at the Partner Conference last September. A company spokesperson confirmed that the new AI Video Lenses use an upgraded version of this platform technology.
The initial three Lenses include "Raccoon" and "Fox" - creating dynamic effects with fluffy, endearing animals alongside the user, as well as "Spring Flowers" - creating a zoom-out effect with the user holding a bouquet. Snap has stated that it will add new Lenses weekly, demonstrating a long-term commitment to investing in this technology.

Users can access these Lenses through the familiar Lens carousel, select a Lens, and record a Snap using the front or rear camera. The generated AI videos will be automatically saved to Memories, creating a seamless experience for users.
The decision to develop an in-house AI model, rather than relying solely on partners like OpenAI and Google, brings a dual advantage to Snap. The company states that by deploying in-house technology, they can provide high-quality AI tools at lower operating costs - a crucial factor as technology companies seek to optimize expenses.
Last month, Snap announced a text-to-image AI model for mobile devices, which is expected to support several Snapchat features in the coming months. This move demonstrates the company's clear strategy of building an AI ecosystem deeply integrated into its core products.
"These Lenses, powered by the video generation model we developed in-house, bring the most advanced AI tools available today to Snapchat users through the familiar Lens format," Snap said in a blog post. This statement not only highlights the company's technological leadership but also leverages users' familiarity with Lenses as a competitive advantage.
