I've been saying for years that Bitcoin needs a technical upgrade. It is possible to make Bitcoin scale to have fast, cheap and fully anonymous payments while having very low requirements to run a full node. We're not in 2011 anymore.

Bitcoin Core hoped to create a fee market by limiting the block size, but instead ended up with a security budget issue.
It's now clear in practice that users won't pay large fees. Bitcoin needs to plan its security under the assumption that the fee rate will remain at 1 sat 😐
