On July 21, MetaMask developer ConsenSys confirmed that they will urgently fix the browser extension's abnormal disk writing issue. Multiple users reported that the plugin continuously writes data in the background, reaching up to 5MB per second, causing solid-state drives (SSDs) to write an average of 500GB daily. The problem can be traced back to May 9, when user "Quanquan" reported that an unused MetaMask plugin wrote 100GB of data in a single day. On June 24, user ripper31337 documented the issue in detail, pointing out that the cumulative write volume reached 25TB over three months.
A ConsenSys spokesperson acknowledged the "abnormally high disk activity", primarily affecting users with excessive state data, and promised to fix it by reducing write frequency and optimizing data fetching strategies. The latest feedback indicates that the vulnerability still existed as of July 17. Some users claimed that the plugin had consumed 50% of their SSD's lifespan. The MetaMask team responded on July 19, stating that the repair solution is being advanced. (Cointelegraph)
