The Korea Information and Communications Technology Association, together with the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Personal Information Protection Commission, has established a communication platform to establish an integrated cooperation system in the field of information security. This collaboration is considered to have opened a forum for full-scale discussion on the development of information security technologies and standards between the private and public sectors.
This platform, held on September 5th under the name "Information Security Society," was attended by approximately 30 participants from relevant government ministries and agencies, specialized research institutes, and private organizations. Key participants included the National IT Industry Promotion Agency, the Korea Internet & Security Agency, and the Personal Information Protection Association. The society was established to foster organic connections between policymakers and field technical experts, seeking to address pressing issues and standardize information security technology.
The event's two key topics were "Decentralized Identity (DID)" and "Personal Information Protection Technology." DID, a technology that allows users to control their own identity information, is widely used in non-face-to-face authentication services such as mobile IDs and digital wallets. The forum showcased DID-based service examples and discussed the potential for establishing future standards for digital identity systems. At the same time, the Personal Information Protection Technology Forum presented the progress of establishing a personal information protection framework to address concerns about personal information leakage due to the proliferation of artificial intelligence.
The event was held as part of the "Information and Communication Broadcasting Standard Development Support Project," promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency. This is a mid- to long-term project aimed at simultaneously promoting the standardization and security of information and communications technology at the national level. Standardization is a crucial prerequisite for ensuring interoperability across industries and for global technology adoption.
The Korea Information and Communications Technology Association stated, “We hope that the cooperative measures derived from this discussion will advance information security standard technology to the next level and ultimately serve as an opportunity to further raise the barriers to protecting citizens’ personal information.”
This policy initiative stems from the emergence of technological security and personal information sovereignty as critical issues amidst the accelerating digital transformation both domestically and internationally. Going forward, this collaborative framework will likely lead to joint initiatives in standards development, technology certification, and demonstration projects, generating positive ripple effects across the relevant industrial ecosystem.
