Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko warned that Bitcoin needs to upgrade to a quantum-resistant signature scheme by 2030, otherwise quantum computing breakthroughs could render existing security mechanisms ineffective. He stated that there is a 50% probability that quantum computers will be powerful enough to crack Bitcoin private keys within the next five years. This would require a hard fork, a complex process requiring broad consensus. However, Blockstream CEO Adam Back, Bitcoin Core developer Peter Todd, and others believe that the quantum threat is unrealistic in the short term.
