Crypto wallet provider Trust Wallet says it has discovered a security vulnerability affecting a specific version of its browser extension, with initial damages estimated at over $6 million according to onchain analyst ZachXBT.
The issue gained attention after ZachXBT issued a warning on Telegram, stating that many Trust Wallet users reported having their wallets emptied in a short period of time. While the exact cause has not been determined, these reports coincided with Trust Wallet's recent update to its Chrome browser extension.
Based on the initial list of compromised addresses, ZachXBT estimates that the attackers stole over $6 million from hundreds of users.
On the same day, Trust Wallet confirmed the issue related to Trust Wallet Browser Extension version 2.68 and urged users to immediately upgrade to version 2.69.

Trust Wallet emphasizes that only users of the 2.68 extension are affected; users of only the mobile app and other extension versions are not at risk. The team also advises those who have not yet updated to 2.69 not to open the extension until the upgrade is complete, to avoid further damage.
Trust Wallet stated that they understand the seriousness of the situation and are urgently addressing it, while continuing to provide updates to users.
The incident occurred amidst a surge in attacks and phishing campaigns in the crypto market. It is estimated that the total value of crypto assets stolen from the beginning of the year to early December exceeded $3.41 billion, higher than the $3.38 billion of the previous year.
