To win a war, (In this case a war that we started), it's critical to understand the history and thinking of your adversary. To know his limits. Iran defended itself from Iraq for 8 years during the Iran-Iraq War. The USA supported Saddam Hussein in his offensive war to conquer Iranian territory.
About a half-million Iranians died, the figures vary. They did not surrender, but rallied and pushed the Iraqis back out of Iran. This war included the widespread use of poison gas by the Iraqis. The U.S. and Germany provided Iraq the precursor chemicals. (Later, Saddam used poison gas against his own Kurds, and that is the part we remember.)
The Iran-Iraq War also included SCUD missile attacks in both directions, but primarily by the Iraqis against Iranian cities. Those Iran-Iraq war veterans are now men in their 60s, and they are greatly respected. This history is taught to all Iranians: that the USA backed Iraq in this long and bloody war of aggression against their nation.
The concept of fighting an 8-year war of attrition is well known to them. The younger generations of Iranians will not surrender to what is seen as another American war of aggression. In my opinion, Iran will never surrender, not even if we turn Teheran into Gaza or Dresden.
