OpenAI's AI programming tool Codex is experiencing another instance of some users not responding to requests. Thibault Sottiaux, the Codex engineering lead, confirmed on X that the issue had been fixed and stabilized for several hours before announcing a reset of rate limits for all users, writing, "You've come to expect it, but yes, that means we will be resetting rate limits in a bit. Enjoy."
This is standard practice for the Codex team. OpenAI's official status page shows that Codex has experienced multiple service outages recently, including "Codex unresponsive," "abnormal Codex usage," and "increased Codex Cloud error rate." After each outage, the team resets users' rate limits as compensation. For a product with 2 million weekly active users and a 25% weekly growth rate, frequently resetting rate limits to respond to outages during a period of rapid expansion is a costly but effective strategy to quickly reassure users.
