URGENT: WELL-DESERVED SENTENCE FOR RAPIST CONGRESSMAN: The Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia sentenced Representative Modesto Enrique Aguilera Vides to eight years and six months in prison after finding him guilty of the crime of aggravated sexual assault. The decision was issued by the Special Chamber of First Instance in a ruling dated March 10, 2026, with Justice Blanca Nélida Barreto Ardila as the presiding judge. The ruling also establishes disqualification from holding public office or exercising public functions for the same duration as the sentence. The Court also denied the congressman any judicial benefits, including conditional suspension of the sentence and house arrest. Therefore, once the sentence is final, an arrest warrant will be issued so that he can serve his sentence in a prison facility. In the same ruling, the Court ordered Aguilera Vides to compensate the victim, Guisella del Carmen Mejía Viana, with the equivalent of 100 current monthly minimum wages for moral damages, an amount that must be adjusted for inflation at the time of settlement. The Court also ordered the payment of legal fees equivalent to 5% of the value of the judgment. The victim was represented by criminal lawyer Frederickt Barros Mendoza.
