Terafab, a chip manufacturing facility, is far larger than traditional ones, integrating logic AI chips, memory, and advanced packaging into a single facility. Its core objective is to produce 100 billion to 200 billion chips annually, with an initial capacity of 100,000 wafers per month, eventually expanding to 1 million wafers per month—far exceeding the capabilities of mainstream factories like TSMC and Intel.
Musk's initial intention was to address Tesla's explosive demand for AI computing power by providing self-produced chips for the Dojo supercomputer, FSD fully autonomous driving, Optimus robots, and the Robotaxi fleet, thus avoiding reliance on external suppliers such as TSMC and Samsung.
