On March 18, Politico reported that three European officials revealed that the White House is urging allies to help ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and has privately assured them that Trump is open to making high-level statements while pushing for financial market stability.
These officials said the Trump administration is asking European and Asian allies to issue public commitment statements by the end of this week. They added that the White House is not currently particularly focused on specific, tangible contributions. All interviewees spoke anonymously to discuss sensitive topics in the consultations.
This move comes amid growing discontent with allies not joining efforts to secure passage for ships through this crucial waterway. He tweeted on Tuesday on Truth Social, "We don't need anyone's help!"
Even simply expressing public support could help reassure increasingly worried investors and lay the groundwork for the Trump administration to establish a more concrete framework for cooperation in the future.
According to two other European officials, people who have recently communicated with Trump administration officials say that the White House is most concerned about market reaction.
