On March 25, according to a report by The Guardian, the British government will formally release its review report on UK political financing regulations today, including measures to strengthen the prevention of foreign funds (including cryptocurrencies) from interfering with democracy. This comes after Nathan Gill, former leader of the Reform Party in Wales, was sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison for accepting cryptocurrency bribes.
The report's core findings are expected to include a ban on political parties accepting cryptocurrency donations, arguing that cryptocurrencies' anonymity and difficulty in tracing could allow them to be used by other countries to circumvent existing rules and interfere with UK elections. The UK Labour government plans to incorporate the review's findings into its upcoming Electoral and Democracy Bill to comprehensively tighten regulations on political donations.
