Tensions between the United States and Iran are escalating not only on the military battlefield but also in cyberspace. According to a Reuters report on the 27th, a hacking group with ties to Iran, the "Handala Hack Team," publicly claimed that they had successfully hacked into the private email account of FBI Director Kash Patel. The group arrogantly stated on its website that Patel's name is now on their "list of successful hacking victims."
The US Department of Justice has confirmed the leak of emails from 2010 to 2019.
To prove the authenticity of the attack, the hackers posted Patel's photo and what they claimed was his resume online. While Reuters stated it could not immediately verify all the published emails, a preliminary examination of the samples uploaded by the hackers revealed that the leaked data included private and work correspondence from 2010 to 2019.
In response to this cyberattack that has raised national security concerns, a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) official confirmed to Reuters that Patel's emails were indeed leaked, but declined to provide further details. As of now, the FBI has not issued an official comment on the incident. Amid the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, this hacking incident targeting a high-ranking U.S. intelligence chief is likely to further escalate geopolitical risks between the two countries.
