Olaf and Rapunzel memes have taken over the internet after Disney animatronics suffered viral mishaps, much to the delight of social media. Commentators joked that they saw themselves in the plight of the unfortunate animatronics. Like clowns, animatronics exist in a strange space between family-friendly fun and nightmare fuel -- both are equally at home in horror movies and children's birthday parties. Animatronics, however, are far more entertaining if they suffer a dramatic malfunction. Disney's Olaf Suffers A Much-Memed Meltdown First to fall was Olaf, the plucky snowman from Frozen. Olaf was recently unveiled as an AI-powered Disney Imagineering robot, described as "the future" of Disney's theme parks. Days after his debut at Disneyland Paris, the walking, talking animatronic suffered a serious meltdown. Olaf can be seen freezing in place before falling backwards, the impact snapping his carrot nose clean off (amusingly, the moment mirrors Olaf's antics in Frozen, as the snowman is constantly falling apart and losing his nose). Olaf's dramatic malfunction was captured and posted to TikTok by content creator @magictourclub -- the post racked up more than 5 million views, spreading through social media. The clip is oddly cinematic, like a well-timed slapstick joke from classic Looney Tunes, and social media users captioned the footage with relatable one-liners, turning the broken robot into a meme. Olaf's collapse was declared "GIF of the year," a perfect encapsulation of burnout, exhaustion and doomscroll fatigue. After Olaf was hastily removed by park staff and repaired, footage of the Frozen animatronic walking around Disneyland prompted more commentary. Days later, another Disney animatronic suffered a cinematic mishap, creating a perfect set-up for a second viral video. Rapunzel's Hair Is Torn Out By Crows An animatronic of Rapunzel, from Disney's Tangled, was targeted by crows in Tokyo's DisneySea, setting the stage for another meme. Rapunzel leans out of her castle window, watching the world go by as the birds of ill omen tear out clumps of her hair, presumably to build a nest. A clip of the animatronic mishap was posted on X (Twitter) by @k_maru_dau_baby, where it was viewed more than 33 million times. The viral clip is strangely fitting, as Rapunzel, a fairytale princess with magical hair, is targeted for her golden locks in Tangled -- clearly, the crows also saw the appeal of her synthetic strands. The animatronic Rapunzel singing sweetly as crows viciously tear the hair from her scalp inspired more relatable memes. The clip makes an amusing contrast to Olaf's big meltdown, the beleaguered animatronics representing two very different reactions to stress. Some commentators wondered if a third Disney character was destined to fall, or if "The Happiest Place on Earth" had been put under a curse -- quite literally the stuff of fairytales. In the wake of the viral memes, Disney has been handed a golden opportunity for a self-referential gag for Frozen 3. If the much-anticipated animated sequel doesn't squeeze in a scene of Olaf fainting in front of a screaming crowd, then the internet will surely edit it in.
