This morning, Powell took his final step onto the podium in the Eccles Building press briefing room. As he had done at every FOMC press conference over the past eight years, he went up, adjusted his microphone, and began his remarks.

This was Powell's last public address as Federal Reserve Chairman. The agenda was the usual review of the FOMC interest rate decision and answering questions from reporters. With only two weeks left before his official departure, everyone knew this would be a different press conference than usual, but Powell still prepared some unexpected surprises.

With Powell's departure, an era of a Federal Reserve operating in layman's terms has come to an end.

Prediction markets Polymarket and Kalshi recently announced the launch of perpetual futures, while cryptocurrency exchange Hyperliquid is entering the prediction market through event contracts. Perpetual contract trading volume is seven times that of spot trading, generating nearly $1 billion in annual revenue. However, prediction markets suffer from insufficient user stickiness; only 8%-11% of users are still trading a year later, and approximately 75% churn within 90 days. Operating perpetual contracts requires a complex technology stack including a highly liquid order book, risk engine, and funding rate mechanisms.
