Rs 4 lakh scattered on Meerut-Karnal Highway, police trace owner and return cash

Police have returned Rs 4 lakh in cash, found scattered in around a dozen bundles on the Meerut-Karnal highway in Shamli district, to its rightful owner, officials said on Saturday. After a local resident alerted authorities about the money -- comprising six bundles of Rs 500 notes, four bundles of Rs 200 notes and two bundles of Rs 100 notes -- lying on the road near Kabaraut village on Friday, police recovered it and deposited it in the evidence room, Additional Superintendent of Police Sumit Shukla said. Meanwhile, Shubham from Muzaffarnagar district came forward claiming ownership, stating that the cash had fallen while he was returning home on a motorcycle after withdrawing it from a bank in Haryana. Shamli Superintendent of Police Narendra Pratap Singh told reporters that during the investigation, the real owner of the cash was identified as Shubham, and Rs 4 lakh was handed over to him on Saturday. He said the money fell on the road while Shubham was travelling from Karnal in Haryana to Budhana on a motorcycle on Friday. The SP added that Sumit Kumar, who informed the police about the cash, will be rewarded for his honesty. (with PTI inputs)
