Note: This article is from @0xRunchen Twitter, and MarsBit organizes it as follows:
The data platform and consulting company statista compiled and released a Telegram data report, which is the most complete and credible Telegram data currently available on the market, and the latest data is as of January 2023. In today's push, I will extract the key points in this report, and assist some of my personal views to help everyone re-understand Telegram.
1/ Telegram has 800 million monthly users, which is the latest figure in DuRov's tweet (still 700 million in statista), and more than 2.5 million new users sign up for Telegram every day. This figure is 1.4 times that of Twitter (556 million), 0.61 times that of WeChat (1.309 billion), 0.86 times that of Facebook Messenger (931 million), and more than Douyin (715 million).
2/ Telegram is one of the most popular apps in Russia. In 2022, the download volume of Telegram in Russia will reach 34.91 million times, surpassing the second place AliExpress (29.29 million times).
3/ Telegram is not only a social platform, but also an e-commerce platform, and China Foreign Trade Corporation is one of the biggest beneficiaries. Statistics from statista indicate that the sales of goods exported from China (Goods from China) through the Telegram platform will reach US$12 million in 2020. This data cites data from Admitad, but does not give further dimensions such as how these goods are sold and who is buying them.
4/ Telegram has been fined several times by Russian authorities. From May 2021 to August 2022, a total of 53 million rubles will be fined. Considering the exchange rate fluctuations of the Russian ruble, there will be no US dollar conversion here.
Next is some analysis of Telegram user portraits, which can be said to be a proven response to the question that "Telegram is full of pornography, gambling and drugs".
5/ Female users of Telegram accounted for 42.6%, compared with 57.4% of male users. This data cites three data sources DataReportal; GWI; Meltwater; We Are Social, and the statistical time is the third quarter of 2022.
6/ As of August 2022, Telegram's paying users will reach 257,000, and the figure in 2022 will be 154,000. This data is speculated based on data from the App Store and Google Play, unofficial data. Remarks: In July 2022, Telegram will officially launch Telegram Premium.
7/ The country with the largest number of Telegram users is India, with 86.6 million people. In second place is Brazil (15.8 million), followed by the United States (10.89 million), Spain (7.1 million) and the United Kingdom (4.41 million).
8/ According to the data of Q3 in 2022, the countries with the highest market shares of Telegram are Russia, Indonesia, and Malaysia in order. The market shares (the number of Internet users using Telegram) of these three countries all exceed 60%. Followed by Brazil, Saudi Arabia, India, Nigeria, Egypt, Turkey and Cambodia, the market share of these countries also exceeds 50%.
9/ An unexpected figure, Telegram’s market share in Singapore is as high as 48.1%, which means that one out of every two Singaporeans will use Telegram. Again Singapore, with 5.1% of Singaporean respondents citing Telegram as their favorite social network, is second only to Russia's 20.5%.
10/ Another very interesting data comes from AppMagic. The countries with the highest in-app purchase value are Russia (250 million USD), Ukraine (1.54M USD), the United States (1.52M USD) and China (887,000 USD), Hong Kong, China is $220,000. Considering that Chinese users cannot directly use Telegram, this data reflects the situation of Telegram users in China from the side.
11/ In terms of user behavior, the average user will spend 4 hours on Telegram every month in 2022. 6.54 hours for Russian users and 5 hours for Singaporean users. In addition, 59.5% of users who use Telegram also use Twitter.
12/ In terms of content, pornographic content, which we thought was popular, actually accounted for only 13%. 85% of users follow news, followed by 62% of entertainment channels and 58% of education channels. This data also mentions channels related to the Dark Web, up to 4%. It can only be said that there are still many black and gray users.

The above is the data of statisa. Next, I will share how I understand these data and what these data mean to the development of Ton.
1/ Let’s talk about the authenticity of the data first. Both @WillNewDollar and @WuBlockchain pointed out the problem of data conflict in the MAU user area in the comment area. This data comes from SimilarWeb and has a relatively large reference value.
Here is an errata, first of all, the original title is "selected country by selected country", so my expression in the original tweet is wrong. Statista may not have compared the Russian data, because the subsequent Russian data was analyzed separately.
