At Interactive Brokers' earnings call yesterday, a very interesting and noteworthy topic emerged regarding prediction markets, potentially reshaping the entire industry. First, Interactive Brokers isn't just talk; they launched their own compliant prediction market platform back in 2024 and deeply integrated it into their system. Company executives highly value it, viewing it as a future growth business. Goldman Sachs then asked the CEO at the meeting about the current institutional acceptance of prediction markets. Here's the interesting part: the CEO replied that the most traded item in their prediction market is weather temperature! And this isn't pure gambling; it has real socio-economic value. Weather changes directly affect electricity consumption, significantly impacting energy sectors like electricity and natural gas, public utilities like public transportation, agriculture, and tourism. For example, yesterday Shanghai experienced snowfall, requiring households to turn on their heating, potentially causing delays in public transportation and flights. Many companies in related industries then indirectly hedge their risks by betting on temperatures. Therefore, a change in temperature has far-reaching consequences, with counterparties from numerous industry chains, resulting in a very high level of capital inflow. Moreover, unlike sporadic events, weather-related betting is an endless cycle that can be conducted daily, with new contracts opening every day – truly "perpetual" contracts. Furthermore, returning to Opinion, the top three forecasting platforms have already achieved a significant lead over their competitors. @opinionlabsxyz's trading volume surpasses Polymarket, ranking second. However, Opinion is the only one of the three that hasn't launched a dedicated weather section. Therefore, if Opinion were to expand its weather service, perhaps through direct integration with a weather forecasting app, its growth potential would be even greater.
