I've always believed that the body is capable of more than we think, if we give it the right conditions. A full IRONMAN build spans 20 to 30 weeks. Peak training weeks for age-group athletes regularly exceed 15 to 20 hours of combined swim, bike, and run volume. Most of the time that training sits on top of full-time job, family, and the early alarms that IRONMAN preparation demands. The result is structural sleep compression. Training starts before work, long rides push into evenings, race anxiety compounds sleep quality as the event approaches, and by the time most athletes reach race week they are carrying accumulated sleep debt that no single night of rest can resolve. The athletes who arrive at the start line in the best physiological condition are not always the ones who trained the hardest. They are the ones who recovered the most completely. This is the gap.
