Authoritarians have been exploiting this double standard for decades. The law for thee, but not for me—and Western govts and institutions go along. If that is another relic of the post-Cold War period smashed by Trump's bull in a china shop foreign policy, good riddance.

According to the self-proclaimed experts who get quoted at times like this, the corpus of international law can be reduced to one simple rule: "Terrorists and communists are always allowed to strike democracies, but democracies are never allowed to strike back."

Believe it’s a coincidence if you will, but these are also Russia's prime targets because they are Ukraine's staunchest allies. Trump attacking them is yet another Kremlin dream made reality. I believe in coincidences, but I also believe in the KGB.

One of the most bizarre features of Trump's drunk-drive diplomacy is that its main targets have tended to be America's *best* NATO allies in Europe: Poland, Denmark, the UK, Estonia - the countries that spend the most on their military, were part of the coalition of the willing x.com/SaladinAlDronn…

As the people of Iran continue to fight for their basic rights, @SecRubio took action this week to revoke the privilege of Iranian senior officials and their family members to be in the United States. Those who profit from the Iranian regime's brutal oppression are not welcome to

This has been one of my main warning points. The sense of urgency is simulated. There’s no emergency. They are racing ahead in order to 1) break guardrails before they can be repaired and 2) push their loyalists past a point of no return. From my Feb 2025 Atlantic article: "These are not the acts of people who expect to lose power any time soon, or ever. They are racing to the point where they will not be able to afford to lose control of the mechanisms they are ripping up and remaking in their image. What such people will do when they believe that mounting a coup is the lesser risk to their fortunes and power cannot be predicted." theatlantic.com/international/...…

Kasparov makes an incredibly important point here. There comes a time where the regime can’t afford to lose power. They know what will happen to them once they are out of office. So they have no choice but to go "full NAZI". We are entering the most dangerous time now. x.com/kasparov63/sta…

Trying to predict the outrages of autocrats is hopeless because their superpower is to generate constant shocks to dominate the environment. But what’s happening in Minnesota is method, not madness. Trump wants violence, to radicalize & divide, to create pretext for crackdowns. twitter.com/Kasparov63/status/...

NYT admiration of anti-Western dictators has a long history! Did Duranty write this obit of Stalin? Eight years removed from any sentimental WWII "Uncle Joe" propaganda, and still. twitter.com/Kasparov63/status/...

You keep your life only at the regime's discretion is as clear as could be. I remember pointing out the difference between officially sanctioned police brutality in Russia versus George Floyd, where the officer had a fair trial and was jailed. The WH reaction here is Russian.

🎯 Mamdani's "warmth of collectivism" line, naive or ominous or both, is becoming a teachable moment. It would be nice if people would learn about the bitter realities of socialism this way instead of the hard way of living through it.

Capitalism requires an extraordinary amount of cooperation. It depends on trust, shared norms, voluntary coordination, and people choosing to work together across firms, communities, and borders. Markets function because individuals are embedded in social relationships, not x.com/cafreiman/stat…
