'US ATTACK ON IRAN COULD CONSTITUTE WAR CRIMES'
Dozens of international law experts in the US have signed an open letter saying that US attacks on Iran could constitute war crimes, after President Donald Trump reiterated his threat to attack Iranian power and desalination plants this week, according to Reuters.
Trump, on April 1, stated on television that the war could escalate if Iran did not concede to Washington's terms, and threatened to attack the country's energy and oil infrastructure.
More than 100 international law experts in the US from universities such as Harvard, Yale, and Stanford stated in a letter released on April 2nd that the actions of the US military and statements by senior US officials "raise serious concerns about violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, including actions that could constitute war crimes."
The letter specifically noted Trump's mid-March comments, in which he said the US could conduct attacks on Iran "just for fun."
The letter also cited comments by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in early March, in which he said the US does not fight by "stupid rules of engagement."
The experts said they were "deeply concerned about attacks on schools, medical facilities and homes," noting an attack on a school in Iran on the first day of the war.
A leading American Islamist advocacy group warned that Trump's rhetoric throughout the conflict, including threats of attack to send Iran "back to the Stone Age," was "inhuman."
