The lines you see in this cloth notate the stochastic on/off electrical conductivity of the magnolia. It is a record of each moment that the tiny little pore on the leaf’s surface (stomata) opens to release gases, water transpiration, and other activity.
The dotted lines are a rhythmic notation system
It took me over 30 hours to hand stitch this piece (4032 stitches)
Why stitching?
This data sonification is materialized through stitch, illustrating how textiles can store, index, and arrange data in meaningful ways, allowing us to access and recite ephemeral data
