I think from now on anytime the “Is economics a proper science” debate pops up I’m just going to post this meme. For me the leap to excuse making and credentialist logic is the most un-science like aspect of common reactions from lots of economists, and that’s a huge red flag.

MMT is absolutely a thing when you have a financial system with capital controls but much less so when you don’t because when you don’t have capital controls your money is not fully under sovereign control. This is why MMT feels less intuitive in a world of free capital mobility.

MMT dies when you’re over-financialized because backstop that makes MMT work is real production. Japan didn’t spent its fiscal capacity on real production and is furthermore highly dependent on imports and thus currency value. Most people don’t quite grasp the play here but Carney is intent on making Canada the first western country to restore fullsend industrialism. He’s the only western leader who sees that there’s no other path in the 21st century and there’s opportunity in being first out the barn.
