one of the big worries a couple of decades ago which was most conspicuous during the Y2K transition was how much critical infrastructure was still running on FORTRAN code, and how few programmers there were who still knew FORTRAN. a lot of people considered it a looming crisis now the machines can program themselves (yes, with limitations…for now) and i doubt many people being born today or even graduating today will learn to code in the same way ever again

i had one of these bad boys made by Packard Bell. they used this processor generation until the early 90s had 640 KB (that's kilobytes) of RAM which would count up whenever you started to ensure it wasn't corrupted and a 40 MB hard drive had to learn how to use it from a hundreds of pages long manual in a 3-ring binder wrote my first programs in GW-BASIC on it played Test Drive, Prince of Persia, Commander Keen, Black Cauldron, and F-117A Stealth Fighter among others on it kept it all the way until DOS 6 (DOS Shell was a real revelation), but it couldn't run Windows later upgraded to a 486 and then Pentium after that what a time to start using computers, especially reflecting on what we have now, and with AI twitter.com/DCinvestor/status/...

i have a new appreciation for why they say too much money and too much power tends to corrupt one’s soul once you enter that elite company, you don’t want to leave it and you often have to play the game in order to stay because so many become subservient around you, you don’t believe rules apply to you anymore, and the grotesque quickly becomes the new normal
