Despite facing the risk of "going broke" within the next 12 months with an expected loss of $5 billion, OpenAI still decided to launch SearchGPT, an ambitious AI search engine.
Information released yesterday said that OpenAI is testing a prototype of SearchGPT, a search engine that combines the power of large language models with real-time web information. According to OpenAI, SearchGPT promises a more optimal search experience, providing accurate, fast answers and clear source citations.
OpenAI's launch of SearchGPT comes as the company is facing significant financial pressures. A report from The Information shows that OpenAI could "burn" $5 billion in 2023, mainly due to huge costs for AI training and personnel. This number is much higher than that of competitor Anthropic, which is expected to spend only 2.7 billion USD in 2024.
According to The Information, OpenAI has spent $7 billion on AI training and $1.5 billion on personnel this year. With the current rate of "burning money", OpenAI is predicted to soon run out of Capital, estimated to be in the next 12 months if it does not call for more Capital. Despite having raised more than 11 billion USD through 7 Capital rounds, OpenAI still needs more financial resources to maintain operations and pursue its ambition to lead the AI race.
However, despite financial difficulties, OpenAI still affirms that it will continue to invest in perfecting SearchGPT. The company plans to gather feedback from an initial group of test users to improve the product, with an eye toward integrating SearchGPT into ChatGPT in the future.
OpenAI's persistent pursuit of SearchGPT shows the company's ambition to reshape the online search market. However, with the current financial burden, OpenAI will have to prove SearchGPT's commercial potential to attract more investors and ensure resources for long-term development plans.
