The Ethena website appears to have been exploited in a security breach on September 18, and Ethena Labs has advised users not to interact with any websites or applications claiming to be Ethena.
According to a social media announcement from Ethena Labs, the site’s domain registration account was compromised, resulting in the site being disabled until the issue is fixed. Ethena Labs also confirmed that the Ethena protocol was not affected by the vulnerability, and customer assets remain safe.
Security firm Blockaid also warned Ethena users that those who were connected to the site at the time of the attack should not sign any transactions and should disconnect their wallets “immediately.”
MetaMask has also issued a warning to Ethena users about fake websites that are exploiting the vulnerability to commit fraud, steal seed phrases, and compromise passwords. The decentralized finance wallet has marked the Ethena website as a “phishing site,” advising users not to use it until further notice.
According to a recent report from Immunfi, losses from cryptocurrency hacks exceeded $1.2 billion by the end of August 2024, representing a worrying 15.5% increase year-on-year.
On September 3, 2024, the Penpie protocol — a standalone platform on Pendle — was exploited, resulting in a loss of $27 million to customers. More recently, the decentralized finance platform Delta Prime was also hacked, resulting in a loss of $6 million. Hackers modified contracts to drain assets from Delta Prime pools on the Arbitrum network and immediately converted the stolen $6 million in stablecoins into Ethereum.
