Mr. Trump's team is screening candidates to take on roles related to crypto policy in the White House.
The team of President-elect Donald Trump is considering creating a dedicated position on cryptocurrency policy, marking the first time the White House has had such a role, according to Bloomberg.
Bloomberg reported that Trump's team is screening candidates for this role, citing people familiar with the matter.
It is unclear whether this position will resemble a senior White House staff role or a "crypto czar," according to Bloomberg.
During the recent campaign, Trump has expressed support for cryptocurrencies. He has pledged to fire U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler, pardon Ross Ulbricht - the founder of Silk Road - who is serving a life sentence, establish a Presidential Advisory Council on Cryptocurrencies, and build a national strategic Bitcoin reserve.
After his election victory, Trump has nominated crypto-friendly figures to top positions, including Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick as U.S. Commerce Secretary, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a Bitcoin supporter, as Health and Human Services Secretary.
Cryptocurrency leaders have started reaching out to Trump's team. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said he has spoken to people close to Trump about staffing appointments. According to the New York Times, Circle's executives have also had discussions with Trump's transition team.
According to Fortune, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has had a call with Trump to discuss cryptocurrencies and who will be appointed to lead the SEC and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
The creation of an official position focused on cryptocurrencies in the Trump administration, if realized, would mark a strategic move to regulate and support this rapidly growing industry.
