Amazon's shareholders have recently called on the company to consider adding Bitcoin to its balance sheet as a measure to combat inflation. This move reflects an increasing trend among major corporations, including Microsoft and Tesla, seeking Bitcoin as a strategic asset to preserve value and generate benefits for shareholders.
In the context of soaring inflation, traditional assets like cash and bonds are no longer as effective in preserving value as before. In contrast, Bitcoin has demonstrated strong growth potential: since the beginning of 2024, Bitcoin's price has increased by 131%, far exceeding the returns from bonds. Over the past five years, the value of Bitcoin has increased by over 1,200%, affirming its position as an effective financial protection tool.
Shareholders point out that with total assets of $585 billion, of which $88 billion is in cash and bonds, Amazon should consider investing a small portion into Bitcoin. The proposal suggests that by allocating just 5% of its reserve assets to Bitcoin, Amazon could mitigate inflation risks and create long-term value for shareholders.
Beyond the balance sheet, many opinions also suggest that Amazon should integrate Bitcoin as a payment method. Changpeng Zhao (CZ), former CEO of Binance, posted on the X platform:
"Accepting Bitcoin is very simple and not complicated. Pay with Bitcoin?"
If implemented, this idea could enhance Amazon's competitiveness in the global e-commerce market.
Companies like MicroStrategy, Tesla, and Block have held Bitcoin in their reserves, leading to an increase in stock value and enhanced profitability. Particularly, MicroStrategy, one of the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin, has witnessed triple-digit stock growth after heavily investing in cryptocurrency.
Meanwhile, Microsoft shareholders are also preparing to vote on the possibility of adding Bitcoin to the balance sheet, highlighting a broader trend in the business community.
Although Bitcoin is known for its price volatility, Amazon's shareholders believe that holding a small percentage of Bitcoin could generate greater long-term value. This would allow the company to capitalize on the potential growth of digital assets while diversifying its investment portfolio.
If Amazon decides to join the Bitcoin game, this move could pave the way for many other companies to embrace cryptocurrency as an essential part of their asset management strategy. Currently, all eyes are on Amazon's upcoming decisions - will they join the likes of Microsoft and Tesla in entering the new era of digital finance?
