When anything is intertwined with quantum, it seems to be instantly imbued with a strong sense of the future and mystery. Quantum biology is no exception.
Just this month, the Quantum Biology DAO raised 1,724.02 WETH, worth about $6.886 million at the time, in a token auction on the BIO Protocol, far exceeding its original fundraising target by 1,344.74%.
The auction attracted 1,032 bids, with 635 successful transactions. Treating these successful bidders as independent investors, each investor on average invested more than 2.7 ETH (about $10,840 at the time). Notably, one address successfully invested as much as 71.6 ETH in a single transaction. Additionally, another investor expressed an investment intention of 88 ETH in a single transaction, but unfortunately, their bid did not reach the final transaction price.
So, what is this "Quantum Biology DAO" with an average investment of over $10,000, and what mysteries and prospects does the field of quantum biology it is committed to promoting hold?
What is Quantum Biology DAO?
According to the article "The Future of Quantum Biology" published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, quantum biology mainly explores the processes in biological systems that cannot be accurately described by the laws of classical physics. Typical examples of biological processes exhibiting quantum effects include electron and/or vibrational energy transfer, and magnetic field effects in electron transfer and bird migration. Quantum effects manifest as long-range effects (such as electron and proton tunneling), characteristic temperature dependence, magnetic field effects, involvement of superposition (or delocalized) states, and resonance effects. Quantum biology may also have a huge impact on many technologies, including sensing, health, the environment, and information technology.
Quantum Biology DAO (QuantumBioDAO) also believes that quantum biology has tremendous potential impact on health and longevity, biomanufacturing, and the pharmaceutical industry. QuantumBioDAO has discovered that weak magnetic field effects in biology are measurable, and these weak magnetic fields can affect DNA repair, cellular oxidation (a key mechanism for maintaining health), and cell division rates (a core mechanism for biomanufacturing).
In QuantumBioDAO's view, the impact of quantum biology will further expand to other fields and industries in the future. By properly configuring magnetic fields, we can make space travel safer and even nurture life and ensure food supply on other planets. At the same time, the long-lived quantum states that exist stably at room temperature in biology will inspire us to build more advanced quantum computers.
What QuantumBioDAO is doing is bridging the gap between basic science and traditional venture capital, and building a bridge between experts and the public in this field, while also actively engaging in related education to showcase the close connection and importance of quantum biology to the public, in order to attract more attention and funding to this field.
According to QuantumBioDAO's vision, it also plans to support the development of new quantum instruments. Specifically, an optical microscope with nanosecond time resolution and optical detection of magnetic resonance, which can directly detect the electron spin superposition state inside cells without damaging the cells. In addition, QuantumBioDAO also aims to create and capture valuable IP, as well as accelerate the development of quantum biology, supporting the launch of a series of quantum biology startups.
Quantum Biology DAO Ecosystem
The Quantum Biology ecosystem consists of three autonomous entities: the Quantum Biology Institute (research institute), Quantum Biology DAO, and Quantum Biology Incubator.
The Quantum Biology Institute, a non-profit organization based in California, aims to prove that biology operates at the quantum level and lay the knowledge foundation for future research and commercialization.
Quantum Biology DAO is a non-profit association based in Switzerland, dedicated to promoting basic scientific research in quantum biology, building a bridge between the institute and the incubator, and strengthening communication and connection between technical experts and the public in this field. Quantum Biology DAO may retain relevant intellectual property or fund the development and construction of instruments, and grant licenses to multiple parties.
Quantum Biology Incubator focuses on incubating startups that aim to commercialize quantum biology research results, with the goal of becoming the preferred provider of instruments and laboratory space for quantum biology startups. Although the Quantum Biology Incubator has not yet been established, to better coordinate incentives, the institute and DAO plan to hold a stake in it when it is established. This way, any successful graduates of the incubator will bring financial feedback to the institute and DAO, ultimately enabling them to become self-sustaining.
QuantumBioDAO Token Design
In terms of token economics, the total supply of QBIO tokens is set at 1 billion. 20% of the tokens are allocated to the core team, which will be fully locked for one year and gradually released over eight years; 7% of the tokens are allocated to service providers, with no release period. Additionally, 55% of the tokens are allocated to the treasury; 15% of the tokens are used for community auctions, also with no release period; the remaining 3% are for community incentives.
As mentioned earlier, QuantumBioDAO has successfully held a community auction on the BIO Protocol, raising a total of 1,724.02 WETH and attracting 635 addresses to participate successfully. This means that 150 million tokens will be distributed to these 635 successful auction participants. The closing price of the auction was 0.00001149 WETH per QBIO, which, based on the current WETH price of $3,300, translates to $0.03447 per QBIO.
As for the 3% community incentive portion, QuantumBioDAO stated that it will formulate a specific incentive plan after the token auction, based on the actual situation and needs of the community.
Where Does QuantumBioDAO's Revenue Come From?
Currently, QuantumBioDAO's main revenue comes from the aforementioned community auction. Subsequently, through DAO governance, it can also directly sell additional tokens to raise more funds.
Of course, token sales are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of QuantumBioDAO's revenue diversification. QuantumBioDAO will also explore other profit models, such as IP licensing, which will cover a wide range of areas, including but not limited to IP related to magnetic field configurations, quantum biology instruments, authorized or anonymized patient data, or medical interventions processed and compiled by the DAO.
In addition, QuantumBioDAO plans to support the construction of quantum microscopes and plug-and-play low-magnetic-field rooms (for studying weak magnetic field effects), which may generate profits through the sale or licensing of these instruments.
It is worth mentioning that the commercial deployment of the incubator under QuantumBioDAO will also inject new vitality into the DAO's treasury. Through the successful operation of the incubator and the deployment of commercial projects, QuantumBioDAO is expected to achieve sustained growth and diversification of its revenue.
QuantumBioDAO Roadmap
Summary
Longevity and decentralized science (DeSci) are no longer the exclusive domain of the wealthy elite, but are gradually becoming more common public topics, opening up pathways for more people to participate in the democratization of science. However, we must recognize that the research in these fields is highly complex, facing daunting technical challenges, and scientific discoveries often follow a gradual path, so their in-depth development undoubtedly requires more ample time.
