OpenAI will release an open-source weighted language model for the first time since GPT-2 in 2019

On April 1st, according to Cointelegraph, OpenAI founder Sam Altman stated that he will release a "new open-source weight language model" with reasoning capabilities in the coming months, but first wants to collect feedback on "how to maximize its utility". Open-source weight language models refer to models that can be publicly used, downloaded, modified, or deployed, which, although not as open as a fully open-source model, represents a significant change compared to the completely closed GPT-3 and GPT-4. OpenAI partially open-sourced the GPT-2 model in February 2019 and completed full open-sourcing in November of the same year. On February 12th this year, Sam Altman stated that the company plans to launch GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 in the coming weeks or months.
