April 25, 2025 — OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence company, is preparing for a major turning point in its business strategy. According to a report from The Information, OpenAI expects to reach revenues of up to $125 billion by 2029 and $174 billion by 2030, largely due to new products — especially AI agents, rather than relying solely on the ChatGPT chatbot as it currently does.
This breakthrough growth forecast was revealed during a sharing session with current and potential investors. OpenAI stated that AI agents – artificial intelligence systems capable of executing tasks independently on behalf of humans – will become the center of its future product ecosystem.
OpenAI has repeatedly emphasized its "AI agentic" vision, where AI systems not only respond to queries but also proactively perform tasks on behalf of humans. In a blog post on April 16, the company referred to new models like o3 and o4-mini as breakthrough steps towards realizing more powerful AI agents, paving the way for numerous future business applications.
Simultaneously, OpenAI's Chief Financial Officer – Ms. Sarah Friar – revealed that the company is developing an AI agent capable of handling an entire software engineer's job, not just providing support. This marks a strategic shift, transforming OpenAI from an AI model developer to a comprehensive AI infrastructure provider, from data centers to end-point applications.
While details about upcoming products remain undisclosed, OpenAI is considering revenue models such as advertising and affiliate commissions – where the company will receive a percentage from transactions activated through ChatGPT or its AI agents. This could create a product ecosystem targeting both enterprises and expanding into commercial and consumer markets.
OpenAI concluded 2024 with revenues of $3.7 billion – nearly four times the previous year. However, the company also plans to spend $46 billion in the next 4 years, and expects to start generating positive cash flow in 2029, with approximately $2 billion in cash.
This is a bold long-term investment strategy, demonstrating that OpenAI is making a significant bet on the future of AI agents – as a new "growth engine" in the computing era.
As of April 2025, CEO Sam Altman stated that OpenAI's products have reached 800 million users, equivalent to nearly 10% of the global population. This proves the increasingly widespread influence of AI and the central role OpenAI is holding in this revolution.
