On May 30, the U.S. Trade Representative Grier stated that the scope of Section 301 tariff measures can be expanded as needed. Section 301 refers to the entire content of Sections 1301-1310 of the Comprehensive Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988, which primarily aims to protect U.S. rights in international trade and retaliate against countries deemed to have "unreasonable" or "unfair" trade practices.
Under this provision, the United States can investigate trade practices of other countries it considers "unfair" and consult with the governments of the countries involved. Ultimately, the president can decide to take retaliatory measures such as raising tariffs, restricting imports, or suspending relevant agreements. (Jintian)
