According to a Foresight News report from CoinDesk, the Norwegian Labor Party government recently announced plans to impose a temporary ban on new cryptocurrency mining data centers using high-energy Proof of Work (PoW) systems, with the measure expected to take effect in the fall of 2025. Norway's Minister of Digitalization, Karianne Tung, stated: "Cryptocurrency mining is extremely power-consuming and creates almost no employment or income for local communities."
She emphasized that this move reflects the government's clear intention to "limit cryptocurrency mining in Norway as much as possible." Although Norway has abundant renewable hydroelectric resources that have long attracted Bitcoin miners seeking low-cost clean energy, regulators believe these continuously high-capacity power resources should be better utilized in manufacturing, heating, or AI data processing.
