Elon Musk plans to launch his own messaging app, X Chat, in the coming months, taking aim at Telegram and WhatsApp. The idea is to go head-to-head with existing messaging services, boasting privacy features that go beyond end-to-end encryption.
“At X, we’ve built an entire messaging system from scratch, and we call it X Chat,” Musk said on the recently released podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience.” “It’s very robust, using peer-to-peer encryption, much like Bitcoin,” he said. “We’re testing it thoroughly right now.”
Musk also emphasized that X Chat will completely exclude advertising. “Unlike competitors that use ad-based revenue models, X Chat has no advertising data hooks,” he said. “WhatsApp analyzes what messages users exchange to display ads, which in itself is a security vulnerability.” He went on to warn of serious security risks, saying, “Such data collection structures are equally vulnerable to hackers.”
WhatsApp, operated by Meta, states in its official FAQ that "all messages are end-to-end encrypted via the Signal protocol, which means even we cannot access the content of messages." However, Musk believes this explanation alone is insufficient, and that the revenue structure itself threatens users' privacy.
It remains to be seen whether X Chat can achieve Bitcoin-level security and replace big tech messengers. However, Musk's direct criticism of the limitations of existing centralized platforms and the creation of a new competitive landscape foreshadows significant ripples in the future messenger market.
