According to Reuters , the Department of Government Efficiency ( Doge), which President Donald Trump once XEM a symbol of his commitment to reducing the federal bureaucracy during his second term, has officially ceased operations, with eight months remaining in the deadline outlined in the original executive order. This information was confirmed when the Director of the Office of Federal Personnel (OPM), Mr. Scott Kupor, told reporters that Doge “no longer exists” as a centralized agency as announced when it was established earlier this year.
Doge disappearance comes after a tumultuous initial period in which the agency made sweeping moves to shrink departments, tighten budgets, and reorient operations toward President Trump’s political priorities. Many of Doge ’s former functions have now been moved back to OPM, according to Kupor and internal documents seen by news outlets.
Several prominent Doge members have moved to the National Design Studio, a new entity established by President Trump in August. The group is headed by Airbnb co-founder JOE Gebbia and is tasked with modernizing and “beautifying” the entire government website system. Gebbia was part of the Elon Musk-led Doge team in its early stages, while another member, Edward Coristine, aka “Big Balls,” called on the online community to apply to join Doge on his personal X account.
Doge ’s decline is in stark contrast to its days of media hype. Trump, his advisers, and many ministers regularly post about Doge as a symbol of reform. Elon Musk – once its face – has repeatedly shown off the unit’s activities on X, even demonstrating a… chainsaw at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in February to emphasize the message of “cutting the bureaucracy”.
Although Doge has claimed to have cut “tens of billions of dollars in spending,” independent financial experts say it is impossible to verify this as the agency has never released any detailed reports.
White House spokeswoman Liz Huston said President Trump has received a “clear mandate” from voters to reduce waste, fraud and inefficiency in the federal system, and he is continuing to deliver on that commitment through a variety of measures, even though Doge is no longer functioning as it once was.
Since this summer, signs of the end of Doge have been emerging, especially after a public confrontation between Trump and Musk in May. Musk has since left Washington, and Trump’s statements about Doge have gradually shifted to the past tense, although the original order had stated that the agency would last until July 2026.
Acting Doge Administrator Amy Gleason – who has a background in medical technology – has been an advisor to Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert Kennedy since March. Her public statements of late have focused on the medical field rather than Doge.
While Doge has disbanded, some Republican-led states like Idaho and Florida have created their own local versions of the model to implement their own streamlining programs.
