Recently, several crypto media outlets published reports about "Nvidia CEO: Bitcoin stores excess energy as a currency that you can carry anywhere." In fact, this isn't "news." The video was shared on LinkedIn by Julián Andrés, a cryptocurrency practitioner from Latin America. This video is based on a segment from a 2024 dialogue between Jensen Huang and the Washington-based think tank Bipartisan Policy.
Jensen Huang: Bitcoin is simply converting excess energy into a form of currency.
During the Q&A session of the conversation, an investor from a crypto startup first thanked the rise of AI for helping to alleviate some of the negative public relations pressure generated by Bitcoin mining in the blockchain industry. He then added that many electricity producers and energy suppliers allocate surplus electricity to Bitcoin mining because there is a very clear market there—a one-to-one financial market with immediate returns.
He asked Jensen Huang, "Do you think a similar mechanism, such as a smart grid or a new energy market, could emerge, allowing companies to allocate surplus electricity for AI model training?"
Jensen Huang replied, "One example right now is using surplus energy to convert and store it. Basically, what Bitcoin does is take surplus energy and convert it into a new form, which is called currency. And you can take this currency and take it anywhere you want. So you take energy from one place and then you can transport it all over the world."
AI is a concept similar to Bitcoin, but a more general form of currency.
Changing the subject, Huang described intelligence as a more universal form of currency, the same concept as Bitcoin. The idea is to find places with surplus energy, build data centers there, convert and compress that energy into an artificial intelligence model, and then distribute that model around the world.
