Netflix has announced a new comedy film that focuses on a couple trying to remember a password to unlock millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency.
Netflix announced on Thursday that Hollywood star Jennifer Garner will be one of the leads in the film "One Attempt Remaining." The comedy tells the story of a divorced couple who discover that "the cryptocurrency they won together on a cruise ship is now worth millions of dollars, but they've forgotten the password."
According to What's on Netflix, the storyline will include a notification from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that the couple will have 48 hours to retrieve $35 million from their wallet, or their claim will be void.
Judging from the movie title, the story may be a romantic comedy inspired by real-life cryptocurrency dilemmas, similar to Stefan Thomas's experience, the former Ripple CTO who was locked out of his Bitcoin wallet.
A former cryptocurrency executive forgot the password to an IronKey hard drive containing 7,002 bitcoins—worth approximately $640 million at the time of writing—deposited in 2011. The drive erases data after 10 failed attempts. Thomas noted he had tried eight times, and as of December, he had not publicly stated whether he had regained access to the funds.
Despite the fact that cryptocurrency and blockchain have permeated American culture through movies and TV shows over the past 15 years, the technology has rarely been a central focus of feature films.
Some exceptions include the 2020 feature film "Money Plane", the 2022 documentary "Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King" based on the collapse of the QuadrigaCX exchange, and the upcoming "Going Infinite" based on the downfall of cryptocurrency exchange FTX and its former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.
Are there no Hollywood junkyard treasure hunt movies with a cryptocurrency theme?
One of the most famous cases of early cryptocurrency investors losing millions of dollars in hardware wallets is the story of James Howells, a Welsh entrepreneur who reported losing a hard drive containing the private keys to 8,000 Bitcoins.
Howells stated that the hard drive was eventually discarded in a UK landfill in 2013. He has been fighting with the local council for years for permission to search the site, but as of March 2025, he has exhausted almost all legal avenues for obtaining access.
