The Kingdom of Bhutan is expected to deploy and operate a Sei Network validator in the first quarter, the latest move in the country's efforts to boost its digital transformation.
Validator will be launched through a collaboration between the Sei Development Foundation and the technology arm of Druk Holding and Investments (DHI) – Bhutan’s national investment fund and key holding company.
Phuntsho Namgay, head of DHI's Innovation and Technology division, said the fund plans to continue seeking further collaboration opportunities with the Sei Development Foundation as part of its digital transformation goals.
“This collaboration is an exciting step forward in strengthening Bhutan’s Vai in global blockchain innovation, while opening new avenues for data valuation, advancing scientific progress, and developing fintech.”
Eleanor Davies, head of science and innovation at the Sei Development Foundation, said that some future projects and collaborations with Bhutan could include Tokenize.
“This collaboration is a significant investment in the national adoption of blockchain, further expanding Sei’s global validator network, and will pave the way for us to collaborate on innovative projects such as payments, Tokenize , and personal identification in the future,” she said.
In recent years, Bhutan has quietly emerged as a beacon of crypto adoption. Through blockchain-based initiatives, nearly 800,000 citizens have been able to verify their identities and access government services via a self-sovereign ID system powered by Ethereum .
This country also possesses the fifth-largest amount of Bitcoin among nations, primarily from mining. Bitbo estimates the kingdom holds approximately 11,286 BTC, worth over $1 billion, and a portion of that has been earmarked to support the construction of the Gelephu Mindfulness City special administrative zone.
