There's been a lot of debate on CT lately about token buybacks, and whether protocols should engage in them...
Maple's @syrupsid gave his take on this question in a recent podcast:
"What I call 'Earnings Per Token'... should be the north star...
I think more teams should do some buybacks...
to show that they have revenues, and are sustainable....
however they should be very conscious that the single best use of the funds is to reinvest in the growth of the business, and the protocol..."
I think this is absolutely spot on.
Crypto is basically a high-growth, hyper-disruptive, venture-type arena...
And with that being the case, it would make sense that reinvestment is the best thing projects can do with their revenue...
We are all looking for massive, explosive growth here, in a nascent technology and investment sector that we think will legitimately change the world...
We're not looking to invest in railroads or grocery stores or gas stations or something...
HOWEVER...
Crypto has been plagued by vaporware for years, and tokens that are essentially worthless...
Therefore I think it is very valuable for projects to engage in SOME amount of buybacks, as a 'signalling mechanism' essentially, to show that they are legit businesses...
And that they are focused on accruing value to token-holders...
But to balance that with a healthy amount of reinvestment as well...
@maplefinance is doing exactly this, doing buybacks with a portion of its revenue, but also utilizing much of it for reinvestment.
But yeah - was an absolutely fantastic interview- with @RayBuckton of @WALLY_DAO...
There's a bunch of other really good parts as well, so will embed a couple more clips below and then link to the full version of it after that :)
On RWA's and the need for external yield sources in defi...
"Defi needs that to continue to grow....
You can't generate infinite yield from just shifting the same pieces of the defi puzzle around...
You need to bring it in from other sources...
And I think that's why RWA's will pick up, is they are an important way of importing yield into defi that can then be used on multiple protocols, composably..."

And then yeah, will link to the full video below!
