On February 8th, the South Korean trading platform Bithumb released a post-incident report regarding the "accidental Bitcoin airdrop." It stated that 99.7% of the mistakenly distributed Bitcoins were recovered that same day. The remaining 0.3% (approximately 1,788 Bitcoins) had already been sold and were fully replenished using the trading platform's own assets. As of 22:42:52 on February 7th, 2026, Bithumb's Bitcoin asset consistency was restored to 100%, and all customer assets were protected. The Financial Supervisory Service of Korea conducted an on-site inspection at 13:00 on February 7th.
Bithumb has also decided to compensate each user who visited the Bithumb App or website during the incident with 20,000 Korean won. Users who sold Bitcoin at a low price during the incident will receive 100% compensation for the actual selling price difference, plus an additional 10% consolation money. For seven days starting from 00:00 on February 9, 2026, all cryptocurrency transactions on the platform will be free of charge.
Previously, it was reported that Bithumb employees mistakenly distributed 2,000 BTC instead of the intended 2,000 Korean Won as an airdrop, causing hundreds of users to unexpectedly receive the unexpected gift. As a result, the price of Bitcoin on the Bithumb platform dropped by as much as 10% compared to other markets.
