Let me share an anecdote from college. Getting internships abroad was prestigious. And all students vied for it. Over the years a database of sorts was generated - of professors and universities which were open to providing internships and entertaining students from our college. Decorum maintained that was you were expected research the papers of the professor and only email the ones who overlapped with your interests. Lo and behold someone thought they could automate the whole process by creating a python script, injecting a random paper with an excerpt and reduce months of tedium to a few hours. This absolutely worked for that student multiple times, till he shared it with some other fellow students, who in turn shared with their friends. Within a span of a year the university domain (and this is a respectable university in India) was blacklisted and universities worldwide decided to stop taking internship application via email. Not to forget our emails landed in spam. The moral of the story is what you make of it.
