Odaily Odaily reports that the Korean National Tax Service inadvertently leaked the seed phrase of a cryptocurrency hardware wallet in a press release issued on February 26 regarding the seizure of assets from a taxpayer with substantial tax debts. The press release displayed an unredacted photo containing a Ledger wallet and the handwritten seed phrase.
According to the director of the Blockchain Research Institute at Ilseong University and data monitoring by Onchain, the vulnerability resulted in the suspected theft of approximately $4.8 million (about 6.4 billion won) in assets by hackers. On-chain data shows that in the early hours of the 27th, 4 million PRTG tokens from the relevant wallets were transferred to an anonymous address. Experts criticized the South Korean tax authorities for their lack of basic understanding of cybersecurity, which directly led to a significant loss of national assets.
