Iran may elect its supreme leader today; Trump says he hopes to participate.

According to Xinhua News Agency, citing a statement released by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on March 7, a member of the Iranian Council of Experts stated that a meeting to elect Iran's Supreme Leader would be held within the next 24 hours. Ayatollah Mouzaffari, a member of the Council of Experts, said that the council members are currently waiting for conditions to be ripe in order to prudently elect a new Supreme Leader. Mouzaffari said that no meetings or elections have been publicly held so far, and urged the public not to believe rumors. In response, Trump stated that he hopes to participate in the selection of Iran's next leader, saying he does not want the United States to "face the same problem again every five or ten years." Trump had stated on March 5 that he "must be personally involved" in selecting Iran's next leader. That day, Trump stated that he would not accept the son of the late Supreme Leader Khamenei as Iran's new leader. He said, "I must be personally involved in the appointment."
