ToggleThe conflict between the United States and Iran has not only sent shockwaves through global financial markets but has also detonated a political bombshell at the heart of power in Washington, D.C. Accordingto Axios, Joe Kent, director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), has officially resigned, becoming the first high-ranking Trump administration official to publicly distance himself from the conflict since its inception.
"Iran poses no threat; this is a misled war."
In his strongly worded resignation letter, Joe Kent made no secret of his disappointment with the current foreign policy. He stated bluntly:
"In good conscience, I cannot support the ongoing war with Iran. Iran does not pose an imminent threat to our country. It is clear that we are waging this war because of pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby."
He further accused senior Israeli officials and influential figures in the U.S. media of orchestrating a "misinformation campaign" early in the Trump administration to undermine Trump's "America First" policy of non-intervention in overseas wars.
"This stratosphere has been used to deceive you (referring to Trump), making you believe that Iran poses an imminent threat to the United States and that striking now would result in a swift victory. This is a lie, just like the tactics Israel used to drag us into the disastrous Iraq War," Kent wrote in the letter.
The tearful accusations from Venus's family urge Trump to pull back from the brink.
The devastating impact of this resignation letter is inextricably linked to Kent's background. He not only served in the U.S. Army Special Forces and as a paramilitary officer for the CIA, but he is also a veteran who has been deployed to war zones 11 times. Even more tragically, he is a "Gold Star husband," as his beloved wife, Shannon, was killed in what he described as a "war created by Israel."
Kent emphasized that he has consistently supported the anti-war values promised by Trump during his 2016, 2020, and 2024 campaigns, but the current situation is pushing the United States into an abyss. "I cannot support sending the next generation to the battlefield to fight a war that does nothing to benefit the American people and cannot justify the loss of American lives." He urged Trump to change course, otherwise the United States will slide into decline and chaos.
Trump's camp strongly countered: He's just a megalomaniac.
Kent's resignation sent shockwaves through Washington politics and immediately drew fierce criticism from the Trump camp. Axios points out that while the White House and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence have not yet officially responded, Taylor Budowich, a senior Trump advisor and former Deputy White House Chief of Staff, has already issued a scathing critique.
Budowich called Kent a "crazed egomaniac" and implied that his dramatic resignation was simply because "he knew he was about to be fired and wanted to make a splash before he left."
