Spanish authorities have arrested the last suspect in connection with the kidnapping of David Balland, co-founder of Ledger, according to local sources Le Parisien and AFP.
David Balland and his wife were kidnapped from their home in central France in January 2025. The group allegedly demanded a €10 million ransom from the Ledger co-founder.
Following the victim's rescue last year, authorities arrested at least 10 people (9 men, 1 woman, aged 20–40). Several were detained for investigation and charged with gang kidnapping, torture, and armed extortion.
According to a statement Friday from the Spanish Civil Guard, French authorities have identified and arrested almost all members of the network, except for one individual who fled abroad to avoid capture. This suspect (whose identity has not been released) was apprehended in Andalusia after traveling through various locations and renting rooms online. Due to the assessment that the individual was dangerous and had links to a larger criminal organization, police deployed a large force during the arrest.
Blockchain security company CertiK suggests the kidnapping group may be linked to a sophisticated network operating from Morocco.
Last year saw the highest number of "wrench attacks" (direct attacks aimed at forcing victims to hand over crypto assets), with around 70 violent incidents recorded. In France alone, the number increased significantly, most recently with the failed hacking attempt targeting Binance France CEO David Prinçay.
