According to Foresight News , citing the Hong Kong Economic Journal, a 39-year-old Hong Kong woman met a man claiming to be an employee of a new energy company through a mobile dating app. They later developed an online romantic relationship on WhatsApp. The man lured the woman into investing in cryptocurrency on a fake trading platform, promising high returns. Following instructions from the platform's customer service, the woman transferred over HK$5.5 million to multiple unknown personal accounts over two months before the man disappeared.
Hong Kong police received 15 reports of online romance scams last week, involving nearly HK$10 million in fraudulent funds.
