ToggleArtificial intelligence giant OpenAI's product roadmap has taken a major turn. According to the Financial Times, OpenAI has decided to "indefinitely" abandon its plan to launch an erotic chatbot. This feature, which was initially highly anticipated, has been officially shelved after facing strong backlash from internal employees and investors.
Concerns about illegal content and risks to minors
The "adult mode" plan was first announced in October 2025 and was originally scheduled to be released to verified adult users in December of the same year. However, the feature sparked heated debate within the company and was therefore delayed.
The report indicates that employees and investors expressed significant concerns. The main risks focused on the difficulty in preventing the generation of illegal content and the potential harm to minors. Furthermore, they believed the company had not adequately studied the potential psychological impact of such highly sensitive content on users. Amidst these concerns and public backlash, the plan was ultimately terminated.
The second project to be cancelled this week is now fully returning to its core business.
Setting aside adult chatbots is part of OpenAI's strategy to refocus on its core products. The company is attempting to refocus its resources and efforts on core productivity tools and foundational models that deliver tangible benefits.
It's worth noting that this is the second application product OpenAI has cancelled in just one week. Foreign media pointed out that the company just announced the closure of its highly anticipated AI video generation model, Sora, and its application programming interface (API) on Tuesday. The consecutive cancellations of major and controversial projects indicate that OpenAI is actively regrouping and establishing its future development focus.
Upholding the ethical bottom line of AI
In recent years, the ethical boundaries of AI-generated content (AIGC) have been a focal point of debate within the industry. While relaxing restrictions on pornography and adult content may bring enormous commercial benefits and massive traffic, the ensuing regulatory pressure and social responsibility have made major tech giants tread carefully. OpenAI's decision undoubtedly sends a clear signal to the market: while pursuing technological implementation and monetization, upholding safety and ethical standards remains the paramount and non-negotiable priority for the current AI industry.
