In 2014 Ethereum had a 42 day presale where anyone could buy ETH for $0.31 In the beginning you could buy 2,000 ETH for about $300 By the end the price went up to about $0.46 per ETH 6,600 people bought in and Ethereum raised $18,300,000 in total Vitalik warned every buyer: "DO NOT lose your wallet file or your password, or you will never be able to access your ether" The wallet needed a password with at least 10 characters, capitals, lowercase, special characters and numbers Most people came up with something in 30 seconds and never wrote it down That was 11 years ago 630 of those wallets have never moved a single coin 532,426 ETH sitting in wallets nobody can open At today's price that's over $1,000,000,000 in Ethereum that will probably never move again One family in Washington DC has $6,000,000 in ETH they can't touch because they forgot the password Some became millionaires, some lost everything to a forgotten password
